Mindfulness Studio Brand Storytelling in Practice
When Emily, founder of Pause + Purpose, asked if I wanted to step into the role of content creator for her mindfulness and yoga studio in Westport, it was a full body yes.
At the time, I had already been deeply involved in the studio as it took shape, helping manage it and building connections within the Westport wellness community. As the studio grew, Emily was looking for a way to more intentionally capture what made the space feel so special, the moments of connection and reflection that are often hard to put into words.
At the same time, I was rediscovering my own creative voice through photography, and the role became a natural intersection of both.
The Vision
Emily, a former wedding photographer, had created beautiful imagery when launching the studio. But what she was really seeking was something deeper, a way to visually communicate the emotional experience of gathering in the space in community.
Pause + Purpose wasn’t just a place to take a class. It was a place where people came to slow down, reconnect, and feel part of something. The challenge was capturing those intangible moments in a way that felt honest, calm, and inviting.
Building a Visual Library
Rather than approaching this as a one-time session, we built a consistent, evolving visual library over time that included still photographs and video clips.
To maintain a cohesive visual identity, Emily also guided the editing style. The images were finished using Portra-inspired presets, drawing from the soft muted tones and natural palette of Kodak film. It gave the studio a subtle, recognizable look that felt warm, understated, and quietly consistent across everything they shared.
While my own editing style typically leans clean and true to life, part of my role as a branding photographer is adapting to the visual language of each brand. In this case, embracing a softer, film-inspired look helped the imagery feel fully aligned with Pause + Purpose’s aesthetic.
It’s always a balance, creating images that feel consistent with my work while also reflecting the unique tone of the brand I’m capturing.
What We Captured
I photographed classes during the day and at night, special events both in the studio and at the Westport Library, and gatherings that took place out in nature.
We also documented the space itself through a series of wide shots and small details that reflected the warmth, texture, and quiet character of the studio.
For the teaching staff, referred to as mentors, we created a simple and cohesive approach to headshots. Photographed against a white wall in available daylight, these images offered consistency across the website while still aligning with the studio’s natural, understated aesthetic.
When the studio launched a line of merchandise, we created a mix of lifestyle imagery and flat lays that felt aligned with the rest of the brand while supporting new offerings.
A Different Kind of Presence
Photographing within an active mindfulness and yoga space required a different kind of presence.
When capturing live classes, I moved slowly and intentionally, wearing grippy yoga socks so I could move quietly through the space without disrupting the experience. It was important to remain almost unnoticed, observing rather than directing, while still being ready to capture meaningful moments as they unfolded.
At the same time, we were mindful of privacy, always allowing anyone in class the option to opt out of being photographed.
Intentional Content Days
Because the nature of live classes didn’t always allow for ideal angles or fully composed moments, we also scheduled occasional content days.
During these sessions, we recreated class environments with real members, allowing for more intentional compositions while still maintaining authenticity.
By combining these two approaches, we created a library of images that felt both natural and thoughtfully crafted.

How the Images Were Used
Over time, this approach created a versatile and deeply aligned visual library that supported the studio across multiple platforms.
The photos and videos were used throughout the studio’s website, email marketing campaigns, social media, and class and event promotion.
They allowed Pause + Purpose to show up consistently, with imagery that reflected not just what the studio looked like, but how it felt.
The growing library also gave the team flexibility, so they always had relevant, on-brand imagery to draw from as new offerings, mentors, and events were introduced.
A Lasting Impact
While my work at Pause + Purpose looked different from the branding sessions I photograph today, both in its breadth and its ongoing nature, the images are a testament to the kind of community that can be built when intention and connection are at the center.
The kind that lingers, even beyond the space itself.
